Family fun at Crewe Hall

Castles, treehouses, telescopes and trains make Cheshire particularly good territory for a family adventure - and plenty of the best bits are less than half an hour from Crewe Hall.

We've compiled a fun-filled itinerary of our top recommendations so you can make the most out of your stay with us - read on below!

Inspiration for your itinerary

Why not start the fun before you even arrive?

Coming from the south? Stretch your legs at Trentham Estate - around 25 minutes from the hotel. This huge estate combines gardens and woodland making it a much better place to stretch your legs than another motorway service station.

Travelling from Chester or North Wales? Stop at Beeston Castle. Climb through woodland to the ruins of one of England’s most dramatically positioned medieval castles and, on a clear day, look out across Cheshire towards the Welsh mountains.

If you want a full day out there are some fantastic choices within easy reach of the hotel.

BeWILDerwood Cheshire is a magical spot for kids and grown-ups alike. You can explore giant treehouses, huge slides, wobbly bridges and woodland trails and turn an ordinary walk in the woods into something altogether more adventurous. Plus there are craft activities and shows to enjoy.

Equally fun is The Crocky Trail, an adventure playground near Chester which is perfect for thrill-seekers. Hurtle down the famous large drop slides and explore the trail itself which includes rope swings, mazes, tunnels and other obstacles.

For a slightly more grown-up option that’ll still be popular with the kids, head to Tatton Park - around 36 minutes away. Make a day of the estate, with parkland, gardens, the mansion and farm to explore.

Jodrell Bank is a must-visit for science lovers. Stand beneath the enormous Lovell Telescope, get hands-on with interactive exhibits and venture into the Space Dome. A really good option for curious older children.

Sometimes you just want a quick activity so you can get back and make the most of the hotel.

Wheelock Hall Farm is a great outdoor option. Meet the farm animals and enjoy a tractor ride before blowing off some steam in the play area.

For craft lovers, The Potters Barn is the perfect spot to spend a few hours, with options to make, throw and decorate your own creations.

Got a kid who loves all things creepy? Head underground to Hack Green Secret Nuclear Bunker, a former secret bunker with a fascinating Cold War history. Kids get a free Spy Training Manual and are set the mission of finding the spy mice. If they’re successful they’ll get a special certificate.

History fans will also enjoy Crewe Heritage Centre. Explore locomotives and model railways, watch trains from the viewing platform and, on selected days, ride the miniature railway. Toot toot!

Crewe Hall itself deserves some exploring. Set the children loose on the hotel treasure hunt, follow the nature trail through the grounds or borrow a game and find a corner of the lounge for some family competition.

And don’t forget your swimming stuff. There are dedicated kids’ swim times every day.

No need to pack up and head straight back home. Squeeze in one last activity on the way.

Heading south or towards the Peak District? Try Little Moreton Hall - around 20 minutes from the hotel. This wonderfully wonky Tudor house looks almost as though someone has built it incorrectly. Kids will love walking the wibbly, wobbly floors, seeing what Tudor toilets were like and meeting the families of ducks that live in the moat.

Or head into Nantwich for one last wander. Pop into the free Nantwich Museum to discover the town’s salt-making and Civil War history, then stretch your legs with a walk along the River Weaver or around Nantwich Lake. It’s an easy final stop that can be as quick or leisurely as you like.
